Successful Drupal Contrib Projects: Some Non-Technical Tips

So you wrote some code and you posted it on Drupal.org so everyone can use it. Great! Now the work begins. Writing code is only one step to making a Drupal contrib project successful, and too often we treat it as the only step. Let's talk about everything else you should do to make your project great.

I will share what I've learned, through analysis, interviews, and experimentation, about what makes Drupal contrib projects successful. I'll cover everything from planning to maintenance to leaving a project. I won't talk about code at all.

You'll leave with plenty of information on how you can make your Drupal contributions more successful. And also some inspiration.

Boost your drupal contribution skills & stay social

Learn how to grow your Drupal contribution skills and stay social at the same time. This session will introduce DrupalContribute events and give some advice on how to start contributing or improve as a contributor.

DrupalContributes are small gatherings where a group of people work on the issue queue of a contributed module.

In this session we will deeply get into what DrupalContributes are, the reasons why you should attend them, why you definitely want to organize them and how to grow your contribution and coding skills while staying social.

We will share our experience in these kind of events after successful experiences with major modules such as Twitter and Devel, with all the tips and tricks learnt in the way.

What do DrupalContributes bring about:

They empower local groups, which get along together to participate.
Maintainers get a lot of work done in the issue queue.
Attendants learn to interact with the issue queues, performing triages, reviewing and submitting patches, and also testing the module and improving its documentation.

What this session will cover:

DrupalContribute, what it is and why to organize/attend one.
Cases of success. Personal experience.
Tips and tricks on how to organize one.
What to do if you don’t have a maintainer close enough.
As a maintainer, why should I care?
Contribution is for everybody: a large variety of skills are useful (triage, automated testing, documentation, UX...).
Improving your coding skills ( with some technique examples, such as pair programming, scrum...).
Improving your drupal profile.

DrupalCorn 2012 retrospective

Planning and executing an event for dozens or hundreds of people requires massive planning and organisation. On August 3-4, 2012 more than one hundred people gathered for the 2nd annual DrupalCorn Camp 2012 on the Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa. We had a grand time sharing knowledge and experience in numerous sessions, BoFs, a pre-camp training day, and a great party. There was a wedding, too ...

The organising team learned a lot, much of it the hard way. In the spirit of building on best practices in the community, we'd love to share with you what went right, what went wrong, and how we think it could be better next time (we're already planning DrupalCorn 2013!).

The Drupal Camp Kit

Part of what we think could help is the growing repository of knowledge and experience, in the Drupal Camp Kit. It has been collected, tested (a bit), and refined (needs more!) to make life easier for anyone interested in running a Drupal Camp.

We'll present some of the things to do or avoid when planning and running a camp, key concepts and resources contained in the kit, and where we think the kit needs to go next. Bring your input and questions, too.

Multilingual Drupal 8 - plans and reality

Drupal's project lead Dries Buytaert announced the Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative in May 2011 in hopes to bring ubiquitous multilingual capabilities to Drupal 8 all around. The plans were ambitious.

Many of the big goals were completed as of this session submission and many are still in progress. Come to this session to get an overview of the plans and an up to date review of where we are and what to expect from Drupal 8 when it comes out.

IRC: Collaborating with the wizards behind the curtain

The most prolific and well-known Drupal contributors collaborate real-time using IRC (Internet Relay Chat). They talk about patches up for review and changes they want to make to Drupal and its contributed projects. They trade patch reviews and help each other with thorny problems. And they're always glad to welcome new contributors. In this session we'll discuss the nuts and bolts of IRC -- what it is, how to get connected -- and what you can expect when you stick your head in the door for the first time. It's not all tea and crumpets; social skills in the real world don't always translate into IRC. We'll talk about some of the pitfalls that await unsuspecting IRC newbies, and some basic but non-obvious etiquette pointers that can help you avoid them. Given sufficient time, interest, and connectivity, we'll also have a live demonstration of how to collaborate on documentation or review a patch right on IRC.

So You're New to Drupal and Development?

Maybe you've just created a drupal.org account, downloaded Drupal, and have absolutely no idea what to do next. It's also likely that you've never worked with a CMS (Content Management System) before and it's possible that you have no prior development experience. You know that you want to build with Drupal and that you're committed to learning, willing to contribute, and want to get up to speed as quickly as possible.

I know that this was exactly the case for me and it is the case for many others. Every year, the Drupal community is flooded with new users who are eager and ready. There's no doubt that it can be intimidating from the start. Just hearing the list of basic requirements that Drupal needs to run can be enough to scare a novice user:

Linux - the base operating system
Apache - the software that serves web sites
MySQL - the database which stores configuration
PHP - the language in which Drupal is written

And this is just the beginning. Drupal has a plethora of fantastic tools and technologies that can send those who are brave running for the hills. The issue can quickly move from "How do I build this site?" to "How do I even get started?".

Let me encourage you that you are not alone. Drupal is an amazing and powerful CMS and becoming proficient with Drupal takes time, energy, and dedication. The good news is that there is a great Drupal community that is excited for you to learn and contribute and has provided resources to meet you where you are and help you progress along the way. These resources exist to ensure both your success and the success of Drupal. Like with any journey, if you have a map to help you along the way, you are more likely to get where you're going quickly and efficiently.

“Come for the software, stay for the Community”. The Drupal Community, as a whole, is composed of many smaller, local communities. If the smaller communities didn't exist, where would the Drupal Community really live?

This panel discusses how meetups and events in different regions around the globe work and how we can make them better. This will be an open discussion, moderated and lead by the panel, about what we are doing at our events to create healthy, inclusive, lasting communities.

Why should you come to this session? This discussion will provide new ideas on how to grow local meetups, events and, in-turn, local communities. You'll leave inspired with ideas for better, more exciting meetup content, create more participation, and encourage new attendees.

Who should come to this session? Anyone interested in starting a meeting, improving a meetup, or taking more of a leadership role in meetups.

For a new drupalist trying to learn module development, there are so many great resources. There are a plethora of resources that come at no cost like the documentation on drupal.org, or the help you can receive in IRC. However, some of the highest quality resources like drupalize.me, lynda.com, and the Definitive Guide to Drupal 7 come at a cost. And rightfully so! It takes a lot of time, energy, and effort to produce the material.

This leads the central issue that inspired me to create The Module Off. How can we motivate knowledgeable drupalists to share their knowledge with the community if it takes so much time and effort to produce quality learning materials?

Enter The Module Off, a bi-weekly competition for Drupal developers where they submit some code and a screencast in response to a module development challenge. The best submission wins a prize provided by a sponsoring Drupal-related company.

This session will discuss the motivations for creating The Module Off and the issues that I ran in to when launching the project. We'll delve into questions like:

- What did it take to start a project like this?
- How do you find sponsors to provide prizes for the challenges?
- How did the community respond and how did you deal with negative reactions from the community?

I expect this session to be open ended, a chance for those interested to discuss different ideas to help increase community participation through non-traditional means - especially ideas involving competition, gamification, and partnerships with Drupal-related vendors.
