User Experience Evaluation: What You Need to Know!

This presentation provides a high-level look at methods used to conduct evaluations for desktop and mobile web resources and applications. It first examines best practices for conducting expert reviews – looking at a site against a framework of usability standards and target end user needs. Next it discusses one-on-one methods of conducting research including: interviews with stakeholders, interviews with representative/actual users, and usability testing. It then moves into focus groups as a method to conduct research with multiple users. The final method it covers is a card sort methodology for evaluating organization of content. Audience discussion is encouraged throughout the presentation. In addition, this presentation also includes an activity where the audience is asked to select something they are working on or are users of. Everyone thinks through the process of selecting an audience group and research approach and then we discuss some of these examples.

Web accessibility means providing resources to the public that can be navigated by all users regardless of any limitations. This presentation describes the importance of accessibility for web and mobile content and not only the current laws and best practices, but also where accessibility legislation is heading. The presentation examines the types of impairments that people may have and what technological accommodations they may be using. The presentation also examines the Federal rules related to section 508 for US government website, and explains why following these rules are useful not just for Federal websites but for all sites as a standard that enhances the experience of all users, even those that are not disabled in any way. Video clips are provided to enhance the presentation, and demos of tools to assess accessibility are also conducted. In addition, audience discussion is encouraged throughout the presentation.

You’ve developed a Drupal website and it seems like things make sense to you and to Drupal users but you want to make sure that it’s going to be usable to your end user.

What is usability testing? How does usability testing fit into the UX lifecycle? Is usability testing the same as functional testing? What does it mean to do qualitative research? How much does it cost? How long does it take? When should you do usability testing? Can usability testing be done on wireframes? Can usability testing be done with only a set of templates but no actual content? Where can you conduct usability testing? How do you find the right representative (or actual) users to test? How many users should you test with? How do you create the right tasks? What kinds of data do you collect? Should you pay participants to participate? How much? What is eye tracking? Should you use an eye tracker? How do you analyze the data? How do you report on findings? How do follow up and make sure that your recommendations are taken? When can you do usability testing yourself or at what point should you have an independent party do the testing?

Audience discussion is encouraged throughout the presentation. In addition, this presentation also includes an activity where the audience is asked to select a web or mobile website or app that they are working on or are users of and go through the steps necessary to think through a usability testing process. We then discuss some of the examples from anyone willing to volunteer their process. Highlights videos from Cory’s usability studies will be presented as well.

This session introduces the field of information architecture for web and mobile content. It describes what information architecture is and why the organization of content needs to match user expectations, both top-level navigation and sub-navigation.

A card sort is a tool that is often used to assess the information architecture. This presentation looks at when and why we do a card sort and what methodological approach we use. The presentation also focuses on how we develop terms that go on our cards, whether we do the card sort with physical or virtual cards, and tools that can be used for each method. The presentation then examines how we analyze the data and how we use the results of our analysis to confirm what is organized appropriately and what is not organized in a way that matches user expectations. We also briefly touch on what other methods can be used to assess information architecture, beyond just card sorts. Audience discussion is encouraged throughout the presentation and a video showing an actual card sort being conducted is shown.

With rigid hierarchical site maps giving way to rich graphs of knowledge, is the writing on the wall for the content management system?

Structured content atomises complex subjects into the things people think about, describing the wibbly-wobbly ways these things connect. It mirrors the way we explore knowledge. Links become informative, building bridges between concepts.

This talk looks at the work done by the BBC and others in using logical domain models to drive richly-interconnected experiences stitched into the fabric of the web. It looks at how you can maximise investment in content by restructuring, reusing and remixing.to improve reach, SEO and findability. And it asks the question: Is Drupal our best hope for a CMS designed for the web of data?

Mike Atherton is Head of User Experience for Huddle. With a background in information architecture and web design, Mike was formerly a lead IA with the BBC, working on structured content services for lifelong learning. His presentation ‘Beyond the Polar Bear’ has toured around the world, giving insight into the BBC’s work in using content modelling to deliver its Food and Natural History products.
