Teaching Drupal to be an LMS

Drupal already has many great educational tools from content creation to assessments to surveys to crediting to certification. So how many modules does it take to build a robust Learning Management System in pure Drupal? Use everything the community already has, and glue it all together!

Drupal's relatively new Course module suite (D6 and recently in D7) provides functionality for a course creator to bring learning material together into an e-learning course outline and set requirements for completion based on learner grades or actions. This learning material can be made up of any supported Drupal module or 3rd party component. Students enrolled will then be able to work their way through the Course and optionally earn credits or certificates upon completion.

Course is a fairly agnostic module that provides a robust course administration UI for course creators and a flexible framework for developers to integrate other types of learning material. Course objects provide their own logic for delivering material, and reporting back fulfillment, while Course provides the glue to put it all together - including the configurable course object workflow with restrictions based on time, grades, completion status, content privacy/protection, and more.

For beginners this session will show you how you can use existing modules to build a complete e-learning course using many of the available integrations. And for developers - even though you don't have to be one - this will show how the Course Object API can be easily harnessed to integrate with virtually any Drupal module or 3rd party system.

Course already has integration with many Drupal and non-Drupal course objects:
- Content/Books
- Quiz
- Webform
- SCORM (D6)
- Moodle (Quiz, Questionnaire, SCORM)
- Polls
- Signup (for taking attendance)
- Ubercart/Commerce (selling courses, paywalls)
- Certificate (awarding tokenized PDF certificates)
- Course Credit (awarding credits)
- Other courses (Courses inside of Courses - to build curriculums)

We will also cover Certificate and Credit more in depth, to show the mapping functionality they have to selectively award credit or certificates based on arbitrary criteria.

By the end of this session, you will have the know-how to create your own flexible courses and deliver them to learners!

There are also new standards emerging for delivering course content such as the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) spec. Some LTI modules are already being worked on for Drupal, and we'll discuss how this will allow Course to be inter-operable with other LMSes and external learning material.

Check out the project page at http://drupal.org/project/course for more resources.

Tutoring@Colorado State University: Connecting students with opportunities for ongoing learning

Tutoring services on university campuses play an important role in increasing student retention rates and improving overall academic success. Despite this significance, tutoring on university campuses is often decentralized, leaving students on their own to locate tutors, support groups, and learning communities. In this session I will discuss an effort to build a drupal-based portal for tutoring at Colorado State University (CSU).

In this session I will discuss the development process including findings from work we conducted using student-based focus groups. I will discuss the status of the project to connect students to tutoring / learning communities (both on CSU's campus and beyond). I will also discuss our future ideas for using "nudge" analytics to identify significant tutoring opportunities based on student profiles and present these findings to students via a digital dashboard (a dashboard to be built using a Mahout recommender system).

<fieldset class="field-group-fieldset group-schedule-info collapsible  form-wrapper" id="node_session_full_group_schedule_info"><legend>Schedule info</legend>

Status:

Proposed

</fieldset>

How Oregon State University manages Large Scale Drupal

Click here to watch How Oregon State University manages Large Scale Drupal.

How Oregon State University manages 1,000 Drupal sites, and how to learn from our mistakes.

Background:

Oregon State University has been using Drupal on a large scale since well back in the Drupal 4 days. We’ve had to come up with some unique solutions to providing a large number of Drupal sites before tools like Drush and Aegir existed. We are now working on how to take advantage of the latest tools, while maintaining and improving upon the functionality we already have.
Target audience:

This is a technical discussion aimed at the people who need to support a large scale Drupal deployment. This includes system architects, drupal managers, and drupal developers.

Topics:

The pros and cons of our homegrown web application to manage Drupal sites.

Managing site owners and responsible individuals.

Drupal directory structure and what we did differently.

Automated site deployment with python and drush.

A look at our install profile.

Managing our code base and custom development.

How we do bulk updates.

Automating Cron.

Scaling the front end

Caching

Load balancing

Web server cluster

MySQL cluster

What works well and what we need to do differently.

Our next generation Drupal architecture and how we’re going to get there.

Slides:

Drupalcon2013-OSU.pptx

<fieldset class="field-group-fieldset group-schedule-info collapsible  form-wrapper" id="node_session_full_group_schedule_info"><legend>Schedule info</legend>

Status:

Accepted

Time slot:

Tuesday, May 21 - 09:00am-10:00am

Room:

B 113 - NewMedia!

</fieldset>

Buenos Aires City Gov: Drupal implementation strategy

Click here to watch Buenos Aires City Gov: Drupal implementation strategy.

Buenos Aires is the capital and larger city in Argentina, about 3 million people live in the city and 4 million people commute every day from the metropolitan area.

BA City Gov established the first New Media Office of latin america and our Open Gov initiative its leading the region.

2 years ago, we visit DrupalCon Chicago searching for a solution for our websites.

2 years later, we have integrated 400 websites in just one, adopting Drupal as BA City Gov main platform, with our own (soon to be) distribution.

However, use of Drupal and other open-source and/or free tools can still be a challenge from a procurement, management or regulatory standpoint. In 2012 we have seen agencies such as the White House have overcome some of these barriers and are now active on GitHub and Drupal.org, FEMA released their new site and shared their baseline throughout DHS, and agencies like GSA continue to pave the way for use of free tools via Terms of Service. However, these examples continue to be the exception and many agencies and teams find implementing i
This session will overview the management, procurement, and methodologies that allow teams to most effectively utilize open-source in government.

Providing insight to how the federal government can work within existing guidelines to be more engaged participants in the open-source space, this session will include a panel presentation and feature case study examples from government implementations. The panel will present on the following topics and will be followed by a series of Drupal4Gov BOF sessions:
1- Working with terms of service (GitHub, Drupal.org, Google Analytics, etc.) and how this process works in the federal space.
2- Management methodologies that work: the pros and cons of Kanban, Scrum, and Watergile methodologies.
3- Procurement models that support agile development models (throughput, velocity, team based vrs. individual models).
4- Technical leadership, mentoring and development models: How the Acquia Open-Government Team is using Drupal Ladders internally and externally to grow project teams and the federal Drupal community.

Join us after the presentation for Drupal4Gov BOF Sessions on the following topics:

    Federal Procurement & Building Development Teams
Management Methodologies & Community Involvement
Technical Leadership, Mentoring and Drupal Ladders for Gov

University A-Team: Enterprise Level Drupal Training for Higher Ed

What does it take to successfully implement a comprehensive Drupal training system at an enterprise level, on a university budget?

This session focuses on the following, using the A-Team principle:

Determining the goal

A = audience - understand the capabilities and needs of your community

How big is your audience?

What does your audience need to do?

Who is your system configured for? IT/Web Professionals? Office Staff?

What are the components?

T = technology capabilities

Is your system configured for an average audience or for a fearless one?

Some things to consider when configuring your system

E = environment

Learning space

Multi-user site?

Individual training sites?

Methodology

Physical - will live classes be conducted? If so, consider

Room availability and scheduling

Equipment capabilities

Virtual - will remote training be available? If so, what type?

Live (webinars, etc)

Video or podcast

On-line manual, FAQ, powerpoint distribution

A = advertisement

Leveraging your marketing team

Network, network, network

M = management support

Top-down support is a requirement

In Practice Here at Oregon State University

Our original training program

Our current training program

Our future training program

<fieldset class="field-group-fieldset group-schedule-info collapsible  form-wrapper" id="node_session_full_group_schedule_info"><legend>Schedule info</legend>

Status:

Proposed

</fieldset>

TAP is a collection of free and open-source tools which support the creation and delivery of mobile tours. The tools also serve as examples of producing and consuming tour content using the TourML specification. Currently TAP consists of authoring tools built on top of the content management system Drupal, a native iOS mobile application, and a web-based mobile application built upon the jQuery Mobile library.

Originally developed by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, TAP along with the TourML specification has been fully open sourced for use by the museum community. Currently TAP is being utilized to provide mobile tours by The Art institute of Chicago, Balboa Park, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and The Indianapolis Museum of Art amongst others.

This session will provide an overview of how we leveraged drupal to build this open source suite of tools and how it has been implemented in the museum community.

Migrating the Library

We'd like to present on our experience migrating a high traffic higher ed site (GW Libraries) to Drupal. We'll discuss planning, user testing, module selection, and cat herding with a strong emphasis on lessons learned.

This is a conversational session, aimed at organizations that have yet to take the plunge and would benefit from seeing a roadmap used by peers in the world of higher education, non-profit and government.

A (brief) blog post on our process: http://library.gwu.edu/scholarly-technology-group/posts/migrating-librar...
