The CLAIR Distribution: A Collections Management System for Museums and Institutions

CLAIR is an open-source Collections And Internal Records management system built on Drupal. It gives museums and institutions the ability to manage online collections and can be used as an "out-of-the-box" Collections Management System. It is fully customizable and designed to provide a base system that can be customized and scaled to meet most (if not all) business requirements.

Session participants will gain direct hands-on experience and a thorough understanding of how to use CLAIR to manage online collections.

The first half of the session will begin with an introduction to Collections Management Systems with a review of several live websites and systems. We will compare several leading proprietary systems, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each, and discuss how to select a system that meets requirements.

During the second half of the session, participants will be given access to a CLAIR demo site that we will use to create and manage online collections. Topics covered include:

  • Review of CLAIR's full feature set
  • How to create a collection and customize the layout
  • How to add digital assets, slideshows, galleries, and more
  • How to add a calendar and events to a collection
  • How to configure content workflows
  • More.

We will close out the session by reviewing our 2013 roadmap for the distribution, a discussion of feature requests, and a general Q&A with the audience.
