How the University of Calgary tamed Drupal: Moving 800 Drupal 5 sites to Drupal 7

The University of Calgary, one of the largest users of Drupal with over 800 sites recently migrated from Drupal 5 to Drupal 7. This session will take a look at the challenges and solutions to hosting and migrating the massive amount of diverse sites and the users who manage them.

Join us as we provide insight as to how to run a Drupal environment that is managed by nearly 800 unique site administrators and that receives over 150,000 visitors a day. We will show techniques in automating the migration, including dealing with custom modules and bizarre hiccups that change from one site to the next. We will also demonstrate how we keep our brand consistent between different styles sites and use cases across the domain.

This session will also cover how to run a project of this size and the technical and social resources necessary to migrate to and maintain our Drupal 7 environment. One of the big challenges of the University is optimizing limited resources of both people and money when working with large projects, we will discuss how the Drupal migration and sustainment projects fit this mantra.
