How we built a responsive, robust, state-wide news destination in 10 business days

In 2011, the Wisconsin protests attracted international attention. Spikes in traffic took Wisconsin Public Radio's aging website down numerous times -- at one point for more than 48 hours. Shortly thereafter, WPR began the process of moving all of its web properties to Drupal, including ttbook.org, notmuch.com, wpra.org, and wprnews.org.

In 2012, WPR's small web team leveraged partnerships with other public media organizations and used standard Drupal modules and services to build a responsive, robust, state-wide news destination, wisconsinvote.org, in 10 business days.

In addition to discussing high-level implementation strategies, this session will describe how WPR used four basic tools for efficient front-end building with minimal code-writing:

  • Omega for a solid responsive theme
  • Display Suite for quick node layout and special fields
  • Context for flexible block placement
  • Delta for adjusting the page layout
