Open Advocacy - Citizens Connected Goes Open Source

Citizens Connected is a Drupal module that allows advocacy organizations to maintain databases of supporters & communicate with them regularly. As an add-on to any existing advocacy site built in Drupal, it also offers supporters the opportunity to send targeted messages directly to elected officials.

The David Suzuki Foundation is one of the earliest adopters of Citizens Connected- they’ve use it to create dozens of e-mail campaigns. Citizens Connected was originally written in Drupal 6, but has since been re-written in Drupal 7. The new D7 version takes advantage of entities, fields, and other D7 goodies. The tool uses ctools so developers can create "look up" plugins so supporters of a campaign can easily find their specific representative and send a message to them.

Currently we've been integrating with Open North for this functionality, and they've done a great job of making this data easily accessible. Data integration plugins have been written into the system to integrate it with MailChimp, Emma, and Salesforce, although those plugins need to be further abstracted. Citizens Connected is well on its way to being a campaign tool that's fully integrated with Drupal.

Recently, Citizens Connected was promoted to full project status on drupal.org. Members of Affinity Bridge, Raised Eyebrow, and efforts from other developers during code sprints have helped make the code more stable. It is now open sourced & available for contribution on Drupal.org!

Hi Sebastian. We've pulled the proposal over to the Government, Nonprofit, and Education track for evaluation as it seems to be a much better fit. Please let us know if there's any reason we shouldn't do that.
