Why does no-one update their Drupal site?

More than three-quarters of Drupal sites are out-of-date according to Drupal's own official statistics: http://drupal.org/project/usage/drupal

At the time of writing, 590,114 sites use Drupal 7 but only 159,157 use the latest release. The situation is worse with Drupal 6. 245,013 sites use Drupal 6, but only 42,569 use the latest release.

This means that 74% of Drupal 7 sites and 83% of Drupal 6 sites are running insecure versions.

This large number of insecure sites presents a real problem for Drupal users and for Drupal's reputation as a safe system.

This session will focus on ways in which we enable more sites to run our latest and most secure releases.

Ideas covered in this session will include:

- Ways to provide easier core updates
- Better update notifications
- The possibility of a getting started guide in the Drupal admin
- improvements to the business model and tools provided by Drupal hosts
