Our initial challenge was to use Drupal Commerce as a marketplace in a larger e-commerce system that used an external application to supply the product catalogue and to provision purchased services. We needed to identify a method of allowing customers to easily configure their products before purchase, where a single product may have hundreds of variants. With many initial products, and a goal of being able to quickly bring a new product to market, we chose a solution that would allow product configuration forms to be automatically rendered from the imported catalog.
