PANEL: State of the (Freelance) Union

Are you a Drupal freelancer? Do you love the freelancing life (at least most of the time)? You're not alone! This session will share strategies designed to help you love your life ALL the time.

This panel session discusses the variables affecting the freelance web professional's life, the current state of these variables, and significant ways to improve our lives as freelancers. Panel will cover business advice, growth, lifelong learning, taxes, coworking, community participation, local (and national) support organizations, co-ops, networking, time management and productivity, health (healthcare!) and wellness -- improvements which will minimize the scary bits and maximize the fun!

Panelist Bios
Kelly Bell (Facilitator) is the founder of Gotham City Drupal, a freelance Drupal developer collective based in NYC (but with "BatCaves" around the world). As a freelancer herself since 1990, her mission (and that of GCD) is to address the pain points all freelancers share, by "co-op"-ing what should be shared while maintaining all the freedoms that freelancers love.
Steve Purkiss (Panelist), long-time Drupal Community hero and past board member of the Drupal Association, Steve has turned his mighty developer talents to creating a new social/community site for Drupalistas of all stripes: http://drop.coop.
TBA Freelancers' Union Representative (Panelist), a representative and advocate from the groundbreaking collective the Freelancers' Union, (... more details to come)
Michael Pirog (Panelist), co-founder of Kalamuna, author of Kalabox and Kalatheme, has experience from one end of the freelancer spectrum to the other. He spent 5 years working as a one-man tech-band in the DC NFP scene but also has extensive experience as a freelancer and co-op member. He currently is a co-owner of Kalamuna which is a freelancer friendly Drupal design and development shop in the San Francisco Bay area.
Andrew Mallis (Panelist), is an activist and technologist working with artists, non-profits and institutions to build community and social value through his consultancy, Ideograph. Last Fall, he relocated to New York City to engage in the #occupy movement, and continues to be core to the technological infrastructure helping power Occupy Wall Street. Since its launch in February, he continues to leaderlessly lead the international #Occupy Directory project.
Jeff Greenberg (Panelist), is the founder and chief developer of Ayen Designs, a roving member of Gotham City Drupal, Drupal author and columnist (J. Ayen Green). He has 35 years of software development experience (yes, there WAS software back then, thanks very much), consulting and freelancing. Jeff is a socio- and eco-pragmatist, animal lover and Harley-riding scoundrel.

This seems like an awesome lineup, and as a freelancer myself, I'm always in favor of more case studies of successful freelancing! This is a huge part of the Drupal community, so I hope this session makes it in.

I've done freelancing in the past, and I found that it can sometimes be a complicated gig if you haven't learned all the ins and outs. I think the panelists above will do an excellent job imparting their hard-earned wisdom to the benefit of everyone attending.

As a freelancer in Drupal this is where I’ve found the most difficulty – finding answers to such a broad range of questions that others probably know about. Then the question becomes how to connect and possibly collaborate with those other folks. This panel seems to be rich in ideas about those things so yes, I would attend this one for sure.

+1 Please bring this to Portland. Conferences are prime opportunities for freelancers to meet, learn from one another and talk shop. This session is invaluable and I would most certainly attend.

I just wanted to thank all the commenters above for their enthusiastic support. March 5 appears to be the date to watch for, to see if this session makes.

I noticed that a couple of you mention the difficulty in finding the sort of experiential information one gains from long-term freelancing, and please rest assured that our goal with this panel is to answer YOUR questions, and address topics of interest to YOU. Our goal is to impart as much useful info to you as possible, within the timeframe available, and to open doors for further mentoring and community connection among ALL freelancers, old hands and new alike.

Again, thank you all for your support. I think we will have a blast, and I can't wait to meet you all.

Warmest regards,
Kelly Bell

UPDATE: Since this panel did not make the final cut, we will be offering the same discussion as a BoF during the conference. Please watch this space and the BoF boards at DC for updated scheduling information.

Thank you all for your interest, and we will see you in Portland!!!

Cheers,
Kelly Bell
